Interview with a Kappa Reflection
Connis' response
When getting ready for my interview with Mr. Derrick, I was pretty nervous. The reason why is simple: I did my research on him and of course he’s a sophisticated man with jobs and interests similar to mine, so I was planning on doing my best to impress him. Of course, I know that Mr. Jamaal did explain that I did not need to worry but, I still did since to me, it was a pretty big deal.
When the time finally came to interview him, I was ready. I had done my research and figured out that he worked in the U.S. Army, he was a technician at T- Mobile for 7 years and 4 months, he was a technical manager and many other things. The specific thing that I was worried about was if he could answer my questions correctly. I asked things like: “Why did you become a Kappa?”, “Why did you think that mentoring is important?”, and, “What advice would you tell your past self and why?”, Etc. But the main questions were my own. Here's an example, “I noticed that on your LinkedIn, you showed that you were also into technology and turns out I have similar interests for that would you inform me on tips or tricks to get started with this technology dream of mine?” Yes, long sentence I know, but I wanted him to genuinely answer it.
Lastly, after we said our goodbyes, I felt relief. Even though the interview lasted 10 minutes, It felt super long to me. I enjoyed my time and I am happy that I had that interview because it will have a long-lasting impact on me.
